FAQ

perma STAR CONTROL

There are two possible modes: TIME and IMPULSE.

In TIME mode, the drive is powered whenever the lubrication application is turned on. During this ON-time, the set discharge period is completed.

In IMPULSE mode, the customer sets a discharge amount per pulse which is discharged every time the drive receives a voltage pulse.

The power supply (9-30 V) is provided by a 4-wire connection cable. This is available in lengths of 5 m (Art. No. 108432), 10 m (Art. No. 108431), and 20 m (Art. No. 110512).

Yes, pin 2 and 4 are signal lines and provide information about the current operational status:

  • Pin 2 signals "1" when the drive is discharging or in standby mode.
  • Pin 4 signals "1" when there is an error or notification. The specific error or notification is indicated by the code on the display.
  • Pin 2 and Pin 4 are both signalling "0" when there is no power supply or if the connecting cable is faulty.
  • An empty LC is signalled by "1" for Pin 2 and Pin 4 at the same time.

Yes, perma STAR CONTROL can be connected in parallel. In this case, perma recommends that you evaluate the signals individually to receive drive-specific error or notification indications.

The backup battery is empty and must be replaced acc. to the instructions at www.perma-tec.com/star-control-battery-replacement.

  • STAR LC 60: 0.125 cm³ / discharge
  • STAR LC 120: 0.250 cm³ / discharge
  • STAR LC 250: 0.500 cm³ / discharge
  • STAR LC 500: 0.500 cm³ / discharge

There has been an error in setting the size of the STAR LC (here: set size too large).

Correct the setting (press the SET button for 5 seconds), replace the STAR LC and start again.

LC means Lubricant Cartridge.

  • Remove the backup battery, wait 10 seconds or press the SET button.
  • Insert a new backup battery. If "Er" still appears, the drive is defective and must be returned to the supplier.

There has been an error in setting the size of the STAR LC (here: set size too small).

Correct the setting (press the SET button for 5 seconds), replace the STAR LC and start again.

The counter-pressure of the lubrication point has constantly exceeded 6 bar (beyond permitted specification). Consequently, the perma STAR CONTROL has shut down. Please check the counter-pressure at the lubrication point and acknowledge the message by pressing the SET button.

perma STAR CONTROL has been operated continously at temperatures below - 40 °C (outside of specifications) and has therefore shut down. Ensure that the perma STAR CONTROL is operated within a temperature range above - 40 °C.

Note: "ut" can be deleted by pressing the SET button for 1 second.

  • Filled with solid lubricant (grease): all positions (360 °)
  • Filled with liquid lubricant (oil): only vertical, upright mounting (drive unit on top) ±45°

"Lo" is displayed when the backup battery is empty. The backup battery powers the STAR CONTROL display when there is no voltage. Since the display is powered once there is voltage supplied, the STAR CONTROL drive can still be used briefly even when "Lo" is displayed. perma recommends to replace the backup battery.

"OL" can be ignored by pressing the SET button (1 s). If the lubrication point is ok (counter-pressure below 6 bar), the STAR CONTROL continues to operate regularly. If the lubrication point remains blocked (counter-pressure higher than 6 bar), STAR CONTROL will return to "OL".

Check if the drive is supplied with voltage.

The drive head is not correctly screwed onto the STAR LC. Check the marking on the threaded ring (arrowhead) and screw together drive and LC correctly.

It should be exchanged when "LC" is indicated on the display, the LED is flashing red and pins 2 + 4 are simultaneously sending a signal.

  • LED green: perma STAR CONTROL is ON and is discharging in accordance with the setting.
  • LED red: perma STAR CONTROL is OFF and is not discharging (reason: see display)

The PURGE funcion can be used to trigger an additional discharge (3 discharges of 2 cm³ each), e.g. to prefill short hoses.

The selected settings (LC size and discharge period) are adopted. If you are using a different STAR LC size, you will need to change the settings accordingly.

The LED flashes green, the drive performs an initial run with increased discharge amount and the display indicates "ru".

IP 65

  • STAR LC 60 = 60 cm³
  • STAR LC 120 = 120 cm³
  • STAR LC 250 = 250 cm³
  • STAR LC 500 = 500 cm³
  • 6 bar / 87 psi

-40 °C to +60 °C / -40 °F to +140 °F

The display indicates the plug symbol and the flashing arrow. LEDs are flashing green.

The display indicates "ru" and the green LED is flashing green in short intervals.

The PURGE funcion can be activated when the system is switched off or on by pressing the SET button > 10 s. The STAR CONTROL then discharges appr. 6 cm³ lubricant. The additional discharge (PURGE) can be stopped by pressing the SET button. During the PURGE function, the display shows "PU".

See chart.

  • Place drive onto STAR LC and - if necessary - turn until the head of the hexagon screw and the spindle adapter engage.
  • The knurled part of the drive must fit into the knurled part of the STAR LC.

In the default factory settings, the drive does not have any preset values for operating mode, LC size, and discharge period. The necessary initial set-up is as follows:

  • Press SET button > 5 s, "mode" starts blinking
  • Press SET button to select "mode"
  • LC size starts blinking
  • Press SET button to select LC size
  • After appr. 3 s, the discharge period / pulse quantity starts blinking
  • Select discharge period / pulse quantity by pressing the SET button

Depending on the selected discharge period and STAR LC size, it is possible to cover requirements from 0.34 cm³ / 100 h up to 297.6 cm³ / 100 h.

At an ambient temperature of 20 °C with perma Multipurpose grease SF01 and perma hose 101555, the maximum hose length is 5 m.

In perma single-point lubrication systems, all greases up to NLGI 2 and all oils can be used.

Lubricants can be ordered directly from the manufacturer by perma or supplied by the customer.
